Creating a 80% reduction in the need for A55s to be audited

Because the world won’t connect itself

About Truespeed

Truespeed are building a state-of-the-art, full-fibre broadband network across the South West, to provide the fastest and most reliable broadband to homes and businesses in the region. Truespeed aims to offer their services to over 500,000 properties in the near-future and they are well on their way, with over 100,000 residential and business premises already in RFS stage (Ready For Service) in the South West.

The Problem

Truespeed were using a generic mobile forms application to capture blockages and defects on the Openreach PIA network. Each mobile form took over an hour to complete in the field. There were constant issues with version control any time new fields needed to be added to the mobile forms. Back at the office, the data captured on the mobile forms needed to be transferred onto an A55 form – as required by Openreach.

As the mobile forms app had no data validation capability up to 30% of forms were rejected by Openreach due to inaccuracies. Even when A55 forms were accepted, the details of the completed unblockage work captured on the A55b forms had an even higher failure rate of up to 70% – due to missing photos, incorrect GPS coordinates, etc.

Each quarter, Truespeed were missing the opportunity to maximise the funding available through the PIA blockage process. This also required a significant amount of time to process and amend the forms. To compound matters, Truespeed were having to cancel a significant number of orders due to the incorrect evidence being captured in the field on the A55b.

The Solution

Truespeed began using the MapAll blockages app in January 2022. Since that time, the acceptance rate for A55s has risen to 98% and the acceptance rate for A55bs has increased to 95%.

This massive turnaround in performance is explained by Shane Jones, Head of Standards and PIA at Truespeed:

“MapAll has the exact fields required for the A55 data capture. It is not a generic forms app, MapAll has designed the product to exactly meet the requirement of Openreach. Before MapAll we were submitting 10 – 15 blockages per month. Now we are submitting 40 – 50 per month. This is because MapAll is quick and easy to use.”

The MapAll app guides the user through a step by step checklist, capturing the required photos and blockage data. The MapAll app captures the GPS coordinates of the chambers at each end of the blockage and the location of the blockage itself. Furthmore, MapAll validates the location of the chambers against the Openreach database – resulting in maximum accuracy.

The Benefits

As the A55 forms created using MapAll are of such a high standard, Openreach has classified Truespeed as a Preferred Communications provider with a  “PTC” (Path To Collaboration) designation.

This means that Openreach only audit 10% of the blockage reports submitted by Truespeed rather than 90%. This is a major cost advantage and adds great reputational value.

Truespeed has increased tenfold its blockage claims with Openreach, this is as a result of submitting  3 – 4 times more forms due to the ease with which the forms are captured and as a result of 3 – 4 times more A55 forms being accepted by Openreach.

Conclusion

The MapAll Blockages solution is optimised around A55 data capture. It is designed specifically for the fibre industry, unlike generic mobile forms apps. As a result of the accuracy and efficiency gains provided by MapAll, ISPs benefit from a staggering 10 times increase in the amount of money they claim from Openreach for blockages and defects.
